1. Choosing the wrong size system
Bigger is not always better. An oversized system cools too quickly, switches on and off constantly and leaves the air clammy. An undersized one runs flat out all day and still struggles. The right size depends on the room, insulation, window orientation and ceiling height, which is why a proper on-site assessment matters.
2. Choosing on price alone
The cheapest quote often means a less capable unit, shortcuts in installation or no aftercare. Compare what is actually included: the exact model, the installation work, warranty and who will service the system later.
3. Poor placement
An indoor unit that blows straight onto a bed or couch, or an outdoor unit jammed into a hot corner with no airflow, will never perform at its best. Placement should suit how the room is used and give the outdoor unit room to breathe.
4. Skipping regular servicing
Brisbane's humidity is hard on air conditioning. Without regular servicing, dust and mould build up in the coil and drain, efficiency drops and small faults go unnoticed. A routine service costs far less than a major repair.
5. Forgetting the filters
Clogged filters are the most common cause of weak airflow and higher power bills. Check and clean them every three months, and more often during summer.
6. Setting the temperature too low
Setting the system to 18 degrees does not cool the room any faster. It just makes the system run harder for longer. Around 22 to 24 degrees in summer keeps most homes comfortable and keeps running costs down.
7. Cooling rooms nobody is using
Running the whole house when only two rooms are in use wastes energy. Zoning on a ducted system, or a split system in the rooms you actually live in, puts the comfort where it is needed. Smart controllers make it easy to schedule and adjust from your phone.
8. Ignoring the warning signs
Strange noises, water dripping from the indoor unit, unusual smells or a system that takes longer to reach temperature are early warnings. Acting on them early usually means a smaller repair.
9. Using an unlicensed installer
Air conditioning installation in Queensland requires the right licences for refrigerant handling and building work. An unlicensed installation can affect your warranty and your safety. Always ask for licence numbers.
